A brush fire that erupted on the line between Cocoa and Sharpes quickly spread, causing multiple agencies to battle the flames.

In the area, dense with mobile homes, a Brevard County Sheriff’s Office helicopter was also called in to douse the fast-moving fire as firefighters worked on the ground.

Don Walker, a spokesman for Brevard County said that evacuations occurred for 50 homes in the area of Monroe Street to Cherry Street and Broadway Street to Acorn Street, he said.

Tammy Smith was visiting friends when the fire started. Two of their houses burned to the ground.

“It did not seem like they were under control at that time. It was really smoky in there and really scary,” Smith said.

Chopper footage showed multiple structures burning. The forest service used bulldozers to cut the trees, to cut off fuel for the fire. WESH 2 spoke with someone in the area who said they saw structures burnt to the ground.

Walker said nine homes were damaged by fire, and five of those have been destroyed. He identified them as mobile homes.
