Adding insult to injury, Florida property damage insurance complaints rise in the wake of Hurricane Ian.

It’s been nearly 10 months since Hurricane Ian ravaged Southwest Florida, resulting in more than 520,000 insurance claims. ABC Action News learned 15% of those claims resulted in complaints regarding insurance companies and other claims handling issues to state regulators.

In May, the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation (OIR) said they were investigating how insurance companies are handling Hurricane Ian claims. Through two public records requests, we learned the state received 7,894 complaints related to Ian in the first 7 months after the category 4 storm. Reasons range from denials and delays to underpayments and cancellations.

To date over 190,254 property damage claims have been closed out with no payment from insurance companies.

State insurance regulators are finally investigating their fraud for the purpose of assessing fines and suspending or revoking property insurance company licenses. Florida Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis said that his focus is on investigating insurance fraud and his office is working with insurance regulators that handle and investigate carriers mishandling and carrier practices that could be unethical or illegal.

Unfortunately, the Governor and Florida’s CFO were too busy this past year passing extreme regulations to benefit the insurance carriers at the expense of its citizens and in that tunnel vision, did not take the opportunity to simultaneously address the abuse insurance companies put on their insureds. This has emboldened the insurance companies into believing they are protected by the State and above the law. It is a wait and see if there is any real teeth behind this investigations.
