Tornadoes hit southwest Florida Sunday January 16, 2022, damaging dozens of homes. Up to 200 people were forced to evacuate in Lee County after the tornadoes made their homes unlivable. Video on social media showed multiple waterspouts coming ashore in the Fort Myers area.
The tornadoes were spawned from a powerful winter storm that moved across the state on Sunday morning.
January tornadoes in Florida are uncommon. The state has averaged only two tornadoes in January over the last 20 years, although there were two EF1 tornadoes in Leon County last January.
