CLERMONT — The construction of a new development is bringing a surprising problem to some South Lake County homeowners — their lawns are being ransacked by wild hogs.
Mattamy Homes, a developer, has been working on a development called Waterbrooke, located at Highway 50 and Hancock.
Construction requires nearby woods be cleared out, where hundreds of wild hogs live. Wild hogs are not a protected species, so the development isn’t legally bound to preserve or move their habitats.
Their displacement has forced them into nearby neighborhoods including Magnolia Bay, where the hogs have caused an estimated tens of thousands of dollars in damage.
But Mattamy Homes recently contacted Magnolia Bay with a solution. They are now working with the city to approve plans for permanent fencing to protect the neighborhood. Whether or not that will be enough remains to be seen.
Wild hogs are not a new issue for Magnolia Bay homeowners. They have been dealing with property damage caused by wild hogs for three or four years now — ever since the construction of Waterbrooke began.
Hogs are notoriously destructive and classified as nuisance animals by the Florida Fish and Wildlife. Hogs will dig deep into the ground of homeowner’s lawns for food. They will tear up the soil with their tusks and even cause damage to your sprinklers and pipes.
